There is one currency – Super Credits – which can be bought with real money, but developer Arrowhead Game Studios has insisted that the stuff this buys (mostly body armour and helmets) isn’t necessary for progression, and you can earn Super Credits in the game anyway. I’ve certainly not felt the need to buy anything while levelling up over many, many hours of play.

Use the environment. You've got big guns, you've got Stratagems, you've got reinforcements from teammates, but you've also got the environment to utilize. As you roam the map, you might find items you can pick up and throw, such as explosive tanks.

Despite the blurry image, the 60fps performance mode is the place to be - it's mostly at the target, dropping into the 50s in the heavier scenes. The 30fps quality mode is OK, but prone to frame-pacing problems and the occasional, genuine drop beneath the performance target.

Samples are split between your team anyway, so you will be doing everyone a benefício by getting them again. If you're paying solo, look for the test tube icon to show you where your dropped samples are.

One of the most interesting aspects is that mission progress is something the entire player base works toward together. Each of these hostile planets comes with a percentage meter that ticks further toward “liberation” every time a real-life squad completes a mission there. Once the planet is liberated, everyone unlocks new areas and missions.

There's also a setting to adjust the level of image sharpening. At zero sharpening in performance mode Helldivers 2 looks soft and indistinct, while stepping up to the max sharpening level increases clarity at the cost of additional artifacting. Quality mode exhibits the same difference, although given its higher resolution, the effect is a bit more subtle. Helldivers' performance mode runs smoothly. We're mostly at 60fps in typical play, with a very smooth readout, especially when combined with the game's motion blur. The game can suffer from extended dips into the 50s though, typically during larger firefights. In my gameplay the worst I saw was about 50fps, so the game does manage to stay pretty close to 60fps more generally, although it can spend a long time hovering in the 50s in extended firefights. The quality mode also manages Helldivers 2 Gameplay a tight lock on its 30fps frame-rate target, but it clearly has issues with bouts of inconsistent frame-pacing.

Adding to the tactical feel is the game’s tight third-person camera, which limits the awareness you can have of your surroundings. Among Helldivers 2

The Automatons are fully mechanized soldiers of a kind never seen before. But their emblem is eerily familiar …

Join the greatest military force the galaxy has ever seen and make this a safe and free place to live.

Although you can take on missions alone, it’s better with three other players – this is very much a co-op experience. Everyone gets a set of primary and secondary weapons – which means shotguns, SMGs, assault rifles and pistols – as well as grenades. During combat however you can also call in Strategems, special weapons and items ranging from orbital missile strikes to defensive shields and automated machine gun turrets.

PS5 console exclusives almost never come to Xbox, so sadly, the chances of Helldivers 2 ever making it onto Microsoft's consoles are incredibly slim. It did happen before with MLB The Show, though — it even comes to Xbox Game Pass day one now — so at least it's not an impossibility.

You'll need Super Credits to buy exclusive items in Helldivers 2's "Superstore" microtransaction shop, which rotates its stock every two days or so.

You can download and play this content on the main PS5 console associated with your account (through the “Console Sharing and Offline Play” setting) and on any other PS5 consoles when you login with your same account.
